Today we learnt about the importance of Skelingtons. Sorry I know I should use the correct pronunciation but some times the the kids word creations deserve to be spared the dissolving mists of time.

Lani trying to make a pillow case stand up

First I asked the kids to make this pillow case stand up by its self. I playfully mocked their efforts saying totally unhelpful things like “come on It’s just flopped on the floor again, why haven’t you got it standing up yet???”

Then I suggested that maybe it would stand up if we added some support. We had collected heaps of sticks the last time we went to the park. We brought all them inside and I let them get creative with the sticks and a massive roll of sticky tape.

Sabrina with sticks

Even Sabrina had a go.

A stick frame

After a few failed attempts with stacking bundles ( the weight off all the sticks kept making the whole thing collapse ) I taught them how to make a frame.

Pillow case skeleton

We all worked together sorting sticks, cutting tape and binding it together. They were so extremely proud of their pillow case skeleton.

Pillow case skeleton with skin on

With it’s skin on.

We then offcourse we felt our own nobly bones through our saggy baggy skin and had an instant new appreciation for our own skeletons. Lani especially was fascinated that our skeletons stood so well on such a flimsy base. “You’d think our feet should be a lot bigger.”
