We came across these joyful darlings while walking to CarriageWorks down Wilson street. We were heading to The Sydney Children’s Festival but had to stop and share a smile with the Skippy girls.
From what I can gather they were originally painted in 1998 by an artist known as Rosie. They have been vandalised and gang tagged but the residents of Wilson street have lovingly maintained them, re-painting them and bringing them back to life. This site here has more photos of their history if you are interested.
I love this kind of guerrilla street art, especially that of the whimsical kind, and these girls are all over that.
I’m surprised that someone would tag over them; even the tagging type of graffiti artist usually has more respect than that. I’m glad that they’re being maintained.
I used to be a skippy Girl
Yeah Nadiah it’s sad to think some one would find enjoyment out of trashing someone elses work. I read “Tagged” on info about them but if you look at the pics on the site I linked to ‘Murdered with red paint” might be more appropriate.
Yes I did see that about the red paint. Some people are strange.
Let me show you my personal favourite bit of street art – http://wins.failblog.org/2010/04/20/culture-jamming-win-night-and-day/
