I know this is a little late for a Christmas post and a little weird putting it up after the new years one, but that’s just me.

Christmas was going to be really quiet this year( NOTICE HOW I SAID GOING TO BE), my sister lives far away at the humid pointy end of Australia and being an owner of a supermarket Christmas time is work time for her. She tried her hardest to get down for a few days but there was no room in the inn for them, doggie inn that is, all the kennels were full and no one else would look after their dog for them. See they own a dog so big it would put a cow to shame and they couldn’t find anyone willing to undertake the responsibility of minding gargantuan the dog, I mean just imagine picking up the presents he’d leave behind.

My brother couldn’t be there either so it was just going to be Mum and Dad with us. Until a few weeks before Christmas when Jill’s fiancĂ© rang to say that he had bought Jill a ticket as a surprise present for Christmas and that he was willing to stay behind and look after the mammoth animal. He was going to surprise her with the ticket on Christmas morning and then she would fly out here Christmas afternoon. Only she wouldn’t stop whingeing about not coming down that he caved early and told her his plan, which gave her time to scheme.

On a phone call that went a little like:

"Do you know what Pete got me for Christmas?"

"Why, do you Know what he got you?"

she mentioned something about turning up at the airport wearing something a little Christmassy.

Alright, cool, we’ll do the same" I say picturing her hopping off the plane sporting a sparkly Santa hat.

Now the kids had no idea what was happening. We had lunch a our place then when Mum and Dad left we did too, telling the kids that we were going to go to Grandma and Granda’s for dinner and to open some presents that they had there. We hopped in the car then Glenn and I feigned this conversation about how pointless it would be to go there now and that we should drive around for a bit and give Grandma time to make dinner in peace. Kids can be so trusting, they had no idea that anything was up till and hour later when they saw jumbo jets landing out of the car window. then they totally accepted that we were at the airport to pick up a parcel that had arrived for them because the posties don’t work on Christmas day ( we didn’t actually lie to them, just rearranged the truth).

Anyway we got there and marched into the airport with a boy dressed in a thing one jumpsuit with Santa hat and a Christmas angel that looked suspiciously like a pink fairy. Glenn and I went sans Christmas garb as we are some what lacking in clothes that are a little Christmassy.

As we were waiting for the plane to arrive I noticed that no one was dressed for the day, not a single red hat in sight, not even a red shirt. I began to worry about Jill. I mean what if she turned up wearing flashing reindeer antlers and was all embarrassed because everyone else around here looks drab and respectable.

Then she didn’t get off the plane.

Everyone else did.

But no Jill.

Then just as we were giving up and about to begin running around the airport in a mad panic screaming "WHERE IS MY SISTER"

She arrived.

That's it, that's her

"OH no" I whisper to Glenn "That’s it, that’s her"

Also notice the complete lack of Santa clad relatives in the background.

As it turns out Jill had decided that a Santa suit is not the most comfortable travel attire and had elected to put it on in the tunnel from the plane to the airport. Apparently they are most difficult to get into hence her whole plane disembarking and still no Jill. So while the boarding call for the next flight went out and confused passengers lined up behind the barrier only to be told there was a delay and they couldn’t board my sister had three air hostesses literally throwing the Santa suit onto her and sending hurried walkie talkie messages to the poor guy at the barrier that went a little like this "Two more minutes we’re down to the the fluffy white beard"

Jill is just lucky that Lani decided last year to get over her crippling fear of adults wearing costumes.

Oh and notice how the baby is refusing to look at her ?

Now look at what happened when Jill said Hello to her.

Not a fan of Santa. It got even worse when Jill though that maybe removing the disguise would help and Santa ripped his face off.

Anyway that’s my sister for you hilariously unpredictable. We love you Jill, we just don’t think we’ll ever pick you up from the airport again.
