November is a mad month in our family. Not only does it contain Sabrina and Elijah’s birthdays but four of our friends birthdays too, oh and my brothers but he’s to not too keen on parties which is quite a relief really. Also November is the month that Church, bible study, playgroup and sports groups decide to wrap things up with a Christmas party or craft night or a hey let’s catch up over coffee night. Even the city’s against me throwing out one one really interesting and potentially educational event after the next, all in November. Then our friends went and picked this month to have their daughters dedication day and asked us to be the godparents/prayer partners (We are by no means cross about this, we’re thrilled it is such an honour to have the official responsibility of being part of this beautiful little girls spiritual growth, but really guys NOVEMBER????)

It’s like everybody has decided to chuck their event on in November to avoid the busyness of December the Christmas month. Only now so much has been crammed into November I feel like I’m wearing seven different costumes, carrying a tray of chocolate tarts and I’ve just stepped onto an elevator with the entire cast, crew and destinations of Getaway and peering passed an elephant decked out in Indian garb at the gap between the doors that are currently jammed and refusing to open fully I can see a blissfully empty December.

…..Breath……and again…….

It’s just one month.

And most of it will be over after Saturday, Elijah’s party. He is having an Avatar theme, not the tall blue people and not the new dumb movie but the original and very cool anime style series (can’t say kids show because I’m pretty sure there are more adults hooked on it than kids) about a boy found in an iceberg. It’s the picture at the beginning of the post, bet you thought I wasn’t getting to that didn’t you. At the moment it’s Eli’s world, he approaches random strangers at the shops and accosts them with detailed retellings of Aang and his progression through the different bending disciplines. The sad thing is I’m getting to be the same, we communicate through Avatar so much here at the moment I forget everyone else isn’t living in my world and have been known to point and shout “Hey look at the water bending snail” only to be greeted with blank stares. Yes I’m going insane, no it’s not my fault.

I know all you sane people out there know the solution. I’m sure you’re all reading this and thinking just don’t make the parties such a big deal. But I just love seeing the kids so excited. I love trying to live up to my sons impossible expectations (try insisting we have a flying Sky Bison turn up on the day) and I love it when he looks at something I’ve made and says “Yes Mum you can have that at my party, I like that a lot” in his steady voice.

love entertaining kids.

And it’s just one mad month of crazy crafting, baking and planning.

Just one month

wish me luck.

Good luck, Sarah. And kudos to you. I don’t have the patience or funding to make my kid’s birthday parties a dream come true, but I keep promising myself that one of these days…
